When is Raksha Bandhan 2017 ?

This year this auspicious day is going to be observed on 7th August 2017. As per Hindu calendar, Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Shravana Poornima. People belonging to Hindu community consider Shravana the English month of July-August quite auspicious. This month is marked with different religious ceremonies as well as festivals. Every day of the month holds greater significance, and the full moon day being most auspicious is considered best for this celebration and several other religious tasks.

Hence, Rakhi being one of the most awaited Hindu celebrations is observed with great gaiety and fun on the full moon day. The date of the celebration changes in Gregorian calendar and every year it falls on different date though the same period between July-August. In various parts as well as regions of India, the festival is known by different names. In south, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is known as Avani Avittan, in north it is called Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan and in Malabar region, it is called coconut full Moon or Nariyal Poornima.
